‘Satellite’ report exposed as split-screen hoax

The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart grins sheepishly at his own jokes.

IN HIS IMICABLE way, Jon Stewart of The Daily Show on Wednesday night trashed CNN in the segment “Standlot.”
It was hilarious. MUST SEE TV.
Watch it after the jump.
The video caption is not a spoiler: “Using newsroom magic, CNN covers unfolding crime stories happening in two different cities from the same parking lot.”

THE VERDICT comes just 27 seconds into the 4:56 segment: “CNN was found guilty of ‘news-slaughter,’ ” Stewart grins. Don’t you love the way he sheepishly laughs at his own jokes? Just in case the audience doesn’t get it?
This, however, was no laughing matter.
Ashleigh Banfield, from a parking lot in Phoenix, is seen reporting “via satellite” in a split screen with Nancy Grace. Here’s what we all saw on Wednesday night.
You will have to scroll to the bottom of the page to find out the rest. No spoiler, me!
For more than a decade that I have been molding young students who might be interested in journalism – and others who definitely are – I remind them at least three times

Split screen hoax? Exposed!

per semester that if they get their news from only one source, the single best source is The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

HERE’S WHY: TDS producers, writers and on-air talent seem like they must all be former newsmen and women. They are consistently correct in selecting the day’s top two or three stories – whether it be from print or electronic media – and pillorying those who screw up.
They obviously read The New York Times, like I do. And, probably, lots, lots more.
From the West Coast, I can see past that beautiful blue set, with the eyes of a journalist and teacher of journalism, to know that, behind it, are some very savvy people with a keen sense of what is news – and what is ridiculous.
Their parodies are simply delicious.
And then, there is the Moment of Zen.Watch it all here, and laugh with me, again.
