UK government attacks press freedom everywhere
Dec 5th, 2013 by Warren Swil

Public lynching of

Guardian editor

an ominous sign

Edward Snowden provided much of the material to The Guardian, for which it was attacked Tuesday in the British Parliament.

THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT struck a blow against press freedom everywhere on Tuesday with its public inquisition of the editor of The Guardian newspaper.
Alan Rusbridger was hauled before parliament because his paper has fearlessly published information of vital public interest that embarrassed the government of David Cameron.
If this could happen in the cradle of western democracy, with the entire world watching, embarrassed politicians everywhere will feel they can do the same thing with impunity.
It’s a horrendous example, though the courage on display in The Guardian’s response is one that might serve as a lesson to the public about the value of exposing government wrongdoing through investigative reporting.

UK government accused of leak in Snowden drama

UBER-LEAKER DENIES BEING SOURCE FOR MAJOR STORY ABOUT SPYING
The Edward Snowden drama took a bizarre twist this morning when dueling articles were published in Britain’s two leading newspapers.

Who, then, leaked the data?
That is a very good question indeed.
It’s a made-for-television mini-series.

JOURNALISM IS NOT TERRORISM
The detention by UK authorities of Glenn Greenwald’s partner David Miranda continues to reverberate around the globe.
The treatment of Miranda, Greenwald and the staff at The Guardian newspaper is a blot on the U.K. government of David Cameron, and the complicity of the White House is nothing short of disgraceful.
Practicing journalism is not a crime. Journalists should not be treated as criminals.

ANALYSIS: Are Ottoman empire remnants imploding? (with video)

CAN BREAKUP OF MIDEST STATES BE STOPPED?
World leaders are considering military intervention in Syria. But they obviously have not learned the lessons of history – or are simply ignoring them.
When the British and French empires began their decline, they dumped Syria and other territories in the region by creating artificial nation-states.
These are not now and never have been true “countries.” They are collection of warring tribal clans, held together during the 20th century by brutal dictators. Their implosion seems inevitable.
